چکیده

A quantitative study of the vascularity and a qualitative study of the remodelling of the calcified cartilage and subchondral bone end-plateofadult human frmoral and humeral heads were performed with respect to age. In the femoral head the number ofvessels per unit area was found to fall 20 per cent from adolescence until the seventh decade and in the humeral head 15 per cent until the sixth decade. Thereafter an increase was noted in the femur but none in the humerus. More vessels were present at all ages in the more loaded areas of the articular surfaces: 25 per cent more for the femur and 15 per cent more for the humerus. The degree of active remodelling by endochondral ossification declined 50 per cent from adolescence until the seventh decade in the femoral head, and 30 per cent until the sixth decade in the humeral head, rising thereafter to levels comparable to those found at young ages. More remodelling was noted in the more loaded areas at all ages.

The electron microscope appearance of the subchondral bone plate in the human femoral head in osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

The subchondral bone plate supports the articular cartilage in diarthrodial joints. It has a significant mechanical function in transmitting loads from the cartilage into the underlying cancellous bone and has been implicated in the destruction of cartilage in osteoarthritis (OA) and its sparing in osteoporosis (OP), but little is known of its composition, structure or material properties. This...

A comparative study of articular cartilage thickness in the stifle of animal species used in human pre-clinical studies compared to articular cartilage thickness in the human knee.

Histological measurements of the thickness of non-calcified and calcified cartilage, as well as the subchondral bone plate in five locations on the femoral trochlea and medial femoral condyles of species were used in preclinical studies of articular cartilage and compared to those of the human knee. Cadaver specimens were obtained of six human knees, as well as six equine, six goat, six dog, si...

Comparison of Autogenic Costal Cartilage with Chitosan Scaffold in Canine Humeral Defect Healing

Objective- Current trends emphasize the acceleration of fracture healing on the ground that in doing so, the limitation of mobility and complications associated with recovery period are reduced. The present study aims to compare autogenic costal cartilage with Chitosan scaffold in canine humeral defect healing. Design- Experimental study Animal-15 adult male dogs Procedures-...

Subchondral vascularity in the human femoral head.

The integrity of articular cartilage is dependent upon the maintenance of an adequate exchange of metabolites. Much of the data from studies on laboratory animal joints has been interpreted as indicating that the exchange of metabolites occurs solely between cartilage and synovial fluid (Brower, Akahoshi, and Orlic, 1962; Maroudas, Bullough, Swanson, and Freeman, 1968; Hodge and McKibbin, 1969)...

Metabolism of human femoral head cartilage in osteoarthrosis and subcapital fracture.

The cell density and incorporation of 35SO4 and 3H-glycine into human articular cartilage from 8 osteoarthrotic and 7 normal (subcapital fracture) femoral heads were studied. It was found that osteoarthrotic cartilage incorporates on a per cell basis about twice as much 35SO4 and 2--5 times as much 3H-glycine as normal cartilage. There was no relationship between the intensity of incorporation ...
